STUDENT ACTIVITIES AND ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

At The Recording Arts Center, students benefit from a variety of hands-on learning opportunities that go beyond regularly scheduled curriculum and class hours. These activities are designed to deepen technical skills, encourage collaboration, build confidence, and support professional development in real studio environments.

Additional Studio Access (Evenings & Weekends)

In addition to the studio hours required as part of the program, students get to book extra studio time during evenings and weekends to continue developing their projects. This extended access allows students to practice real-world recording and production workflows, collaborate with other students, and work with outside artists and creatives on music projects, audio post-production, and video-based content. Teaching assistants and staff support are available to help students stay productive and safe while working in the studios.

Industry Events & Professional Networking

The Recording Arts Center encourages students to participate in the local Audio Engineering Society (AES) community and other industry-related opportunities. We regularly host events with leading audio brands and professionals, such as microphone and equipment manufacturers, giving students the chance to learn directly from working experts, stay current with industry tools and techniques, and build valuable professional connections.

Guest Speakers, Masterclasses, and Workshops

Students have access to special events that enhance learning outside of class, including guest speakers, clinics, and masterclass-style workshops. These sessions may be offered as part of coursework or as separate enrichment events, providing students additional exposure to real-world perspectives, career pathways, and specialized skills.

Opportunities to Assist on Professional Sessions

Because Studio West operates as a commercial studio, students may occasionally have the opportunity to assist with professional recording or production sessions. While not guaranteed, these experiences can be available to students who demonstrate strong engagement and professionalism. Assisting on commercial sessions can be an important confidence-building opportunity and offers real insight into the expectations and workflow of professional production environments.

Access to Musical Instruments and Creative Resources

Studio West also provides access to a variety of musical instruments and creative tools that students can use during their training. This encourages experimentation, supports musicianship, and helps students grow creatively while they develop their engineering and production skills.
